wedding-bandsMost women, have imagined their perfect ring for years. For us guys though, selecting a wedding band is something that happens a little later in the courtship process. Also, it may be more difficult for us to articulate what we like.

Wedding bands for men can range from simple bands of precious metal to ornate, gem encrusted designs. Today guys have tons of options for styles, prices, and even the type of metal used.

Maybe I am a bit different than both guys, or maybe the majority of the wedding blogs are written by women that just don't understand. That being said, a wedding band is often a man's first piece of jewelery so the process may be a bid daunting with all the different options.

Either way, brides should understand that many guys DO like jewelery too, or at least that they are excited about their wedding band. We might just have a different way of looking at things (I know that comes as a surprise to most women :) ).

During the selection process, one of the most challenging questiosn is what metal to use. Each of the following has a slightly different look, feel, weight, chemical makeup, and several also bring to mind manly technology or industrial settings.

Popular Wedding Band Metals:

Gold

Gold is the classic metal and for most men, this is a perfect option. Gold wedding rings are actually a gold alloy as gold is extremely soft.  Depending on the karat of your gold, it may cause staining of the skin with some people and the metal can also discolor. This isn't the gold itself, but the alloy materials mixed with gold. When selecting a gold ring, make sure to ask the jeweler for details on what metals are contained in the ring.

Platinum

Platinum is the king of metals and the most expensive of the pure precious metals. However, it is also the strongest of the traditional precious metals (i.e. gold and silver). However, it does tend to be soft and scuffs fairly easily. However, it is great for people who may have allergies or who's body chemistry may discolor other metals such as copper or silver.

Stainless Steel

There aren't many things in life that are more manly than "steel". Strong, shiny, and manly, this is a very popular metal to these days.

Titanium

Harder than steel, very durable, and far lighter. Titanium is used in high-tech transportation systems like space rockets and submarines, titanium is also lighter than stainless steel. Titanium rings

Copper

Once again, copper is a metal that just screams manliness. It is also a great choice if you are looking for something unique because copper has a pretty unique look. Don't believe me, look at a new penny! Unfortunately if you look at an older penny you'll notice on of the big drawbacks. Copper wedding rings tend to discolor easily.

Tungsten or Tungsten Carbide

Up to three times stiffer than Stainless Steel, Tungsten is increasingly begin used in wedding bands and the is typically features a dark hue that is buffed to a mirror-like finish. Tungsten is commonly used in armor piercing weapons as it is much more dense than Titanium or Stainless Steel. If you are concerned about body chemistry mixing with the Tungsten, make sure you confirm that it is "Cobalt Free".
