egomedia-photoSelecting a great wedding photographer is one of the most important aspects of planning your wedding. He or she is the one incharge of documenting your special day and ensuring that your memories are preserved so you can share them with friends, children, and grandchildren in the future!

We are lucky to be able to work with the finest wedding photographers in Maryland. One of our favorites, is Jen from egomedia photography, who has worked at many weddings at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club.

Who is egomedia photography?

Sam was an Art Directorjen-egomedia and Lead Animator for network TV and Jen was working at the IMF with technical assistance funding. Sam had shot a number of commercial photography jobs for TV as part of his animation work, and Jen was an incredibly naturally talented photographer.  We saw a real need for art kids to be involved in the wedding photography industry to bring a fresh look, concept, and mission to an otherwise frighteningly stale industry that was filled with more salespeople than real live photographers.

Together we run egomedia photography and have photographed about 100 weddings over the last 4 years.

What are some tips to use when selecting a photographer?

In our opinion, the first key element obviously is to identify wedding photographers whose work really inspires you. Whether it’s through WPJA.com, referrals from other wedding professionals, or a recommendation from friends and family, your first priority should be to narrow the field to 2-3 photographers based on how their images appeal to you.

After that we always recommend asking to see 1-2 recent entire wedding galleries so that you can see whether that photographer is providing you with a consistent collection of images that look equally beautiful from start to finish. Regardless of how much you like the photographer’s personality and their studio, it’s irrelevant if you don’t like the work they produce. You won’t like them later if you are unhappy with the outcome of your photographs.

Once you have identified photography that you love, then you can evaluate other factors, such as responsiveness, personality, and of course the way in which the photographer works. If the photographer and the studio in question are not responsive now, imagine how difficult it will be to get their attention later! It is very helpful to talk with or meet in person with your photographer to see if you feel this is a person with whom you can develop a rapport.

How important is personality?

It is not necessary for the photographer to be your best friend, but it is helpful if you feel their personality and demeanor is a good match and will make you more comfortable on your wedding day. It’s great when you find that you can relate well to the person in question – background, outlook, or a shared vision of the photography you imagine for your wedding day. Working with the studio should be effortless and wholly professional.

"Wedding Photojournalists" or just Photographers?

Photojournalism is the current most popular catch phrase for describing photography style.  It means something different to every photographer, but I can shed some light on what our goals are as wedding photojournalists.  We are present to capture amazing images throughout the wedding day that are natural and highlight mood, emotion, light, color and feeling.  Although we consider ourselves to be journalists in a sense, we feel that it is important to always remain focused on the fact that we are documenting a wedding and want our images to portray our clients, their families, and their weddings in the most positive and beautiful way possible.  We are not looking for gritty or edgy images.  We want to capture stunning and completely genuine moments that are not simply photographs, but in fact the record of the first day of our clients new lives together - and their new family

Our goal is to be as unobtrusive as possible throughout the entire day.  The less we are noticed by our clients, their families and friends, the less impact our presence will have on the everyone in attendance and the better the images.

Most unique wedding photographed at the Beach Club?

The most interesting facet of having an event at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club (CBBC) is that it provides a huge array of choices for locations for ceremonies, receptions, dinner, and dancing.  Depending on the choices made by the bride, groom, and their families, they can mix and match locations on the grounds to make an entirely unique event that perfectly matches their vision for a perfect wedding.  From a formal event for 300 at the Beach House to a smaller more casual affair in the Tavern Room, the locations can really take on a completely different look and feel based on decor, lighting, and layout/arrangement.  When you mix in the really stunning outdoor locations that can be used for ceremonies, cocktail hours, or quiet lounge areas during the most intense portions of dancing you really have one of the most versatile and simply beautiful locations for weddings in the area.

Over several weddings that we photographed at the CBBC in 2009 alone we were always greeted by setups that were wholly unique and customized by our clients to reflect their individual tastes and style. The Beach Club staff is comprised of experienced professionals who can offer you guidance with any aspect of your plans.

What makes the Beach Club make a great venue for photos?

The variety of locations, the stunning views, the attention to detail, and the overall polish of the venue in general all contribute to making photography at the CBBC a real pleasure.  The rooms look great on their own but also provide great starting points to customize with lighting, floral, and decor.

The CBBC is also one of the only locations in Maryland that allows us to take breathtaking images with the sun setting over the Chesapeake Bay.  We use as much natural ambient light as possible mixed with careful and striking off camera flash. We do not destroy the ambiance of the wedding receptions with giant light stands, so we are able to fully take advantage of all of the beauty that each location has to offer.

What inspires you in your work?

Being better.  Better than we were yesterday, and the weeks and months before.  Better than we hoped to be at the milestones we set for ourselves.  Being better than as many peers as we can be.  We are also inspired by the fact that there are always photographers that are better than us, and that inspiration drives us to continue to improve all aspects of our photography as well as our company.

We want our photographs to be ours.  To make us proud.  And set us apart from others because of our vision, outlook, and style.

One thing you wish everyone knew about egomedia?

Having a unique style and look/feel to our work is the one of most important things that we strive for.  We chose to leave very successful careers to pursue wedding photography because we knew that we could excel at it, and bring a level of competency and professionalism that is often lacking in the wedding industry.  We founded egomedia photography to be a real company, not a hobby business, or part time job.  We are young, driven, and absurdly passionate about what we do.
